Colin & Justin Room Makeover

At Glade Plugins®, we've always been committed to helping Canadians make every room in their home as beautiful as possible.

That's why we were so happy to team up with Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan, dynamic hosts of HGTV's hit home reno show Colin & Justin's Home Heist. Together with Glade Plugins® and our Colin & Justin Room Makeover Sweepstakes, they had the opportunity to magically transform one lucky Canadian's room into a perfect paradise.

That lucky Canadian turned out to be Rose Kingdon from Etobicoke, Ontario. Cursed with a dull, dark and dated kitchen that needed a whole lot of love, she was a very deserving recipient of Colin and Justin’s style and passion. Rose had slowly been renovating her home, room-by-room, using design networks for ideas and inspiration. Despite always wanting to beautify the space, she’d never been able to crack the tough nut that was her kitchen. When she found out that she had won a Colin and Justin room makeover, she was ecstatic. When they showed up, the first thing Rose said to them was "it has to be the kitchen!" And indeed, it did have to be the kitchen.

So how did we turn her dimly-lit kitchen into the sensational sanctuary she now loves to cook in?

Gut it

Before beautifying, we had to simplify. After gutting the space, an Ikea kitchen was installed as the basics around which to build.

Flooring

Colin and Justin chose the very versatile Karndean flooring with a 12-inch stone-effect tile that gave the floor a gentle visual texture.

Layout

To both open up the kitchen and add storage, the design duo took out the cabinetry that separated the kitchen from the dining area, removing the kitchen table and filling that space with an extra wall of cabinets.

Cabinetry

In order to brighten the kitchen, white cabinetry and illuminated top cupboards with shiny glass fronts were installed, making everything appear even more spacious and encouraging neatness within.

Countertops

To bring her kitchen from the dark ages to cool and contemporary, the flat-edged counters were a natural selection. White countertops helped refresh the space, while the wood-effect trim worked to visually connect the warm tones in the new floor.

Lighting

Fitted pot lights were chosen for Rose's kitchen, not only because they're easier to maintain and collect less grease, but they don't interfere with eye lines, giving the other design elements more prominence.

Paint and wallpaper

While some of the walls were painted, wallpaper was applied to the main window area to act as an accent wall. By doing this, we were able to save money while still adding drama and personality.

Appliances

Finally, something that Colin and Justin love to do with kitchens is incorporate the appliances within cabinetry lines to create slick, seamless results. With our goal of making Rose's kitchen an open, bright and modern space, this was really the best way to do that.

And that is how, with the help of Glade Plugins®, Colin and Justin were able to turn Rose's kitchen into the perfect space she always knew it could be. She now has a beautiful, bright and open space that will forever remind her of what can happen when you release the magic with Glade Plugins®.

Diane's Corner

Once again, Diane’s mailbag is filled with your questions.

Dear Diane,

My family has so many photos that we’ve collected over the years, but they’ve been doing the same thing all this time – taking up space on our mantle, side board and fridge. Do you have any fun ideas for making the most of our family photos?
