Diane's Answer

Hi Diane,

Summer’s here, and the kids are getting restless. I was thinking of taking them on a cross-country road trip. Any boredom-beating tips for those dull moments?

Rebecca,

A cross-country road trip is an excellent way to see our country’s beautiful natural landmarks, but you’ll definitely have your hands full with the rug rats in the back seat.

Bring Snacks

Fill up some Ziploc® brand Snack Bags with several different types of snacks. Get your little ones excited by taking them to the store beforehand and allowing them to pick out the contents of the mix. How healthy you make the mixture is up to you—you’re the boss!

Make Toys Beforehand, or Maybe in the Back Seat

Get your kids excited for the trip by making some homemade toys in the weeks leading up to the trip. If you’ve got enough room in the back seat, they can build them on the road. What kid doesn’t love Silly Putty™*, Edible Play Dough, or Invisible Ink?

Track Your Trip

Spend some more quality time before the trip begins by creating personal scrapbook maps that will track your road trip. Be creative! Create some anticipation on the road by allowing the children to pick out interesting landmarks they’d like to see along the way, and use these for pit stops. Find some magazine cutouts, or let the children draw their own versions of each resting point. Snap some photos upon arrival to paste in later!

Happy Trails,
Diane

Dear Diane,

My family has so many photos that we’ve collected over the years, but they’ve been doing the same thing all this time – taking up space on our mantle, side board and fridge. Do you have any fun ideas for making the most of our family photos?
