Diane's Answer

Dear Diane,

One of my favourite times of the year is March break. The kids are excited to be off from school for a while, and we’re always trying to find fun and new ways to spend some time together. Do you have any ideas for our family?

Dear Catherine,

It is a wonderful time of the year, isn’t it? It’s a special week with your kids after they’ve been at school for the last couple of months, and it presents a great opportunity to spend some valuable family time together. There are lots of things to do, and I’ll take you through just a few of my favourites.

March break is a wonderful time to get active, and there are many ways to do that. Ski clubs offer March break classes, and skiing or snowboarding is a fun and active thing to get your kids into, especially when they’re young. There are also camps that offer programs over the March break week, including horseback riding and dogsledding!

If budgets are tight, as they are for a lot of us, there’s no reason you still can’t make the most of your March break. One thing we like to do as a family is to sit down at the beginning of the week and write out a list of activities we’d all like to do. The list is usually quite varied and lets everyone feel like they’re getting to do what they want, while giving them the opportunity to do some things they may not have done otherwise. For instance, my granddaughter loves to go bowling, cook great big meals together and go skating, while my grandson prefers tobogganing, building snow people and swimming at the local community pool.

Whatever your budget and wherever you are, the trick to having the best March break possible is some clever thinking and input from everyone. That way, everyone has a great time!

Sincerely,
Diane

With summer fast approaching and school almost out, I need to get my kids ready and excited for summer camp. It’s always a bit stressful for everyone, including me. Any ideas to make this go more smoothly?
