Dear Diane,
Every fall, I find my family is often looking for things to do. It’s too late for swimming and fun in the sun, and it’s too early for all those winter activities we love. Do you have any ideas that can get our family active and outdoors?

Dear Brianne,
Autumn in Canada is one of the most beautiful times of the year, but it can be tricky finding things to do with the family because it’s one of those in-between seasons. The key is to think out of the box and, sometimes, out of the city.
A great way to spend a Saturday or Sunday is to get in the car and hit the road! Canada’s countryside is just gorgeous, especially during the fall. As you drive, revel in all the colours of the leaves you see.
If you plan ahead, you can choose special destinations to make the most of your outing. Find some trails near you and go for a hike. To me, autumn is the best time of the year for walking because the countryside is beautiful and the weather’s perfect—not too hot or too cold.
Another way for your whole family to have fun is to find fall fairs near you! There are lots of towns and villages across Canada, each with their own charm and traditions. Many have their own fall fairs, so finding one on any weekend is easy. Just search the Internet for those going on around you.
When I was a girl, my family used to go to a nearby farm every fall. They’d have pumpkin patches, tractor rides and a corn maze that we loved as a family. To this day, that farm is still a great place to take your kids and many farmers offer these kinds of fun fall activities. As you drive, keep your eyes open for farms that are open to the public—they’re fun and budget-friendly ways to spend a day in the country.
Sincerely,
Diane
